KEIKIGROW PLANT HORMONES

  • Keikigrow FAQ

    1) What conditions are ideal for keiki and root production?

The following conditions have been found conducive to keiki production:

    • Proper timing in the growth cycle of the plant. For example, Keikigrow Plus should be applied only after the last flower on the stem has opened fully.
    • Temperature should be warm-at least 20 degrees C (70 degrees F).
    • Avoid stress from improper water supply. The pH should be around 5.5 to 6.5.
    • Fertilizer. In conjunction with a) above, feed high nitrogen during the period of Keikigrow application at about 200 ppm.

  • Using Plant Hormones

Plant hormones are natural chemicals produced in minute quantities in one part of a plant and have a physiological effect when moved to another part of the plant; a chemical messenger.

Hormones control growth or other physiological functions such as root initiation, flowering, fruit drop, etc. Unlike animal hormones, phytohormones are not produced in individual organs, but are produced by every cell at various times during a plant’s growth cycle. They are necessary for communication in plants because plants do not contain nervous systems. Naturally-produced hormones are properly called hormones or phytohormones. There are three major groups of plant hormones…

  • History of Keikigrow

Dr James Brasch’s first interest in plant hormones (sometimes referred to as phyto-hormones) began when he received a neglected and dehydrated plant of Phalaenopsis intermedia var. Diezii, a natural hybrid of P. aphrodite and P. equestris. The plant was sterile (no pollen) and research revealed that it was extinct in its native habitat, the island of Leyte about 200 miles south east of Manilla in the Philippines. With high humidity the plant was kept alive until several experiments revealed that the basal buds could be coaxed into growth by the application of the cytokinin, benzyladenine. After the plant was saved experiments continued and, after a rigorous statistical analysis of many applications, Keikigrow, was introduced to the orchid world. Several years later, with the addition of vitamins to the lanolin-based mixture, Keikigrow Plus was born.

Keikigrow and our other related products are sold around the world.

    Dr James Brasch

DR JAMES BRASCH DEVELOPER OF KEIKIGROW PRODUCTS

Jim Brasch, founder and director of Plant Hormones Canada, has been growing orchids for about 30 years and is particularly interested in species of the New World. He grows orchids in a hobby greenhouse and under many banks of lights.

When the challenge of saving the extinct and sterile Phalaenopsis intermedia var Diezii arrived, he began his research. After managing to clone the plant with the use of hormones to his satisfaction he began to make the hormone paste available to a wide range of friends and eventually to the orchid world…

    Keikigrow & Orchids

KEIKIROOT is a formula containing auxins and vitamins and is designed to promote rooting on Phalaenopsis keikis (plantlets) and on forced back bulbs of orchids, such as Cymbidiums, Lycastes, Oncidiums etc. When using KEIKIROOT follow normal sanitary precautions and keep KEIKIROOT away from eyes, skin, children and pets. Store at room temperature (about 20 degrees C) and use within one year of purchase.

DIRECTIONS: If the keiki (plantlet) has developed and roots have not started to form after about one month, remove any excess KEIKIGROW (green paste) with a clean tissue. Apply KEIKIROOT to the base of the keikis which have developed from a node on the Phalaenopsis spike. Use a flat tooth-pick to apply a thin layer to the base of the keiki. USE SPARINGLY. Roots should begin to form within two or three weeks…

    Keikigrow & Orchids

Keikigrow Plus is a lanolin paste containing hormones and vitamins to produce keikis (plantlets) identical to the flowering plant from the nodes of Phalaenopsis spikes. It will also encourage any dormant buds such as on Australian Native Dendrobiums, Cattleya divisions or Cymbidium backbulbs to force new growths and promotes the growth of secondary basal buds when crown of vandaceous plants has been damaged.

DIRECTIONS FOR USING KEIKIGROW PLUS WITH PHALAENOPSIS ORCHIDS

Follow normal sanitary precautions. Wash hands and any utensils to be used in a mild disinfectant solution. Keep KEIKIGROW away from eyes, skin and children. .

    Floral Boost

FLORAL BOOST can be used on Phalaenopsis orchid flower spikes before the buds open to promote spike branching. Apply Floral Boost to two or three nodes on the upper portion of the spike – immediately below the lowest flower bud.

After normal flowering is completed you can encourage secondary flowering by applying FLORAL BOOST to only one of the upper-most buds on the spent spike.

Experiment with spikes of other genera such as Psychopsis papilio, Oncidium kahili, Equitant Oncidiums, etc. And apply to base of lower leaves on Angraecums, Vandas, Ascocendas, etc…

    Stoprot

Stoprot contains Bordeaux mixture in lanolin and is designed to treat leaves and bulbs that are suffering from a spreading rot infection. Although designed for orchids it may be used with equal success on any plant. Formerly sulphur or talc were used to treat infections, but they wash off easily.

The action of STOPROT is twofold:
    1) the Bordeaux mixture counteracts the infection as a fungicide.
    2) The lanoline seals the wound from additional water penetration.

Keep STOPROT away from eyes, skin, children and pets…

    Vitagrow-B1

Vitagrow-B1 Repotting / Deflasking orchid solution for root growth

Vita grow B1 contains a balanced complex of vitamin B1 and hormone (Auxin). The auxin (hormone), promotes healthy root development in any plant and when combined with Vitamin B1 will produce sturdy growth which is exceptionally disease resistant. It has been found that both Vitamin B1 and auxins will stimulate root growth and the two together at the correct ratio will have a much greater stimulating effect than either one alone. The solution is ideal to use after repotting and for reviving damaged or dried out plants when you need a burst of root growth…

    Vitagrow-H

Vitagrow-H Complex vitamins & hormones for sturdy growth

This formula contains a balanced complex of vitamins and hormones which provide the necessarystimulants for healthy orchid growth. Vitagrow H contains Vitamins B1 (Thiamine HCl), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin P (Niacin or Nicotinic acid), Inositol and auxin hormones in a specific ratio. These vitamins are standard ingredients of orchid flasking media and their absence in plant cultures or in composts hinders normal growth.

VITAGROW-H is not a fertilizer but promotes the optimum response to your standard fertilizer program. It is especially useful during cool periods…

    Vitagrow – M

VITAGROW M is the orchid tonic with trace mineral elements.

This formula adds the trace mineral elements Manganese, Zinc, Copper, Boron and Molybdenum to the growth stimulants Vitamin B1 and auxin plant hormones. The minerals are particularly useful for promoting the efficient use of regular fertilizers. Vitagrow-M is not a fertilizer, but assists proper absorption of fertilizers and other nutrients necessary for healthy plant growth. In addition to adding this supplement, serious orchid growers should have a water analysis for mineral content and pH completed. If minerals are lacking, trace elements should be added. pH should be adjusted to about 6.5 (See american Orchid Society Bulletin, August 1982 p 836).
